Biography

Phebe Skinner Outen Bogart, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Skinner) Outen Bogart, was born on 30 October 1770 and baptized on 7 December 1770 at the First Presbyterian Church of the City of New York.[1][2]

Phebe's father's will, proved in January 1783, left to his daughters Elizabeth, Phebe Skinner, Martha and Esther, "the house and lott of ground, situate, lying and being int he Out-Ward of said City, which I formerly drew in a Lottery then called and known as Gallaudets Lottery, and wherein Robert Grayham now lives; together with the two dwelling houses situate, lying and being in... Hage Street , wherein James Dove, and my mother and sister now live, to be equally divided between them, share and share alike – to hold to them their heirs and assigns for ever after each of them arrives to the age of twenty one years or marry, which shall first happen;" also "the remainder of my beds, bedding, and cloathing to be equally divided between them, share and share alike." Joseph directed that the rents and income from his real estate be used for the maintenance and education of all his children, and that Phebe and her total seven other siblings and half-siblings also receive equal shares of the residuum of his moveable estate, the girls when they arrive to eighteen or marry.[3]

Phebe was married to John Tabele, son of Jacob and Hannah (Pittinger) Tabele,[4][5] on 2 May 1789 at Trinity Church, New York, by Rev. Benjamin Moore.[6]

In 1800, Phebe and most of her siblings sold their interest in one of the lots from their father's estate to their brother Joseph:

15 May 1800 – James Russel of the City of New York, Mason, and Catherine, his wife, Thomas Ammerman of same place, Cartman, and Margaret, his wife, John Tabele of the same place, Merchant, and Phebe, his wife, William Tabele of the same place, Merchant, and Martha, his wife, George Taylor, Jr., of the City of Philadelphia, Gent., and Elizabeth, his wife, of the first part, to Joseph O. Bogart of the City of New York, Butcher, £750, all their estate of in and to lot in the Fifth Ward of the City of New York, s. corner of Hage Street and Pearl Street along the land of late Joseph Outen Bogart deceased, with the dwelling houses, stores, stables and edifices, etc. Wits: Wm. Coates, Philadelphia, George Janeway, N. York (as to George Taylor and wife) and Sam'l Purdy and Anthony Miller.[7]

(Between 1813 and 1822, each of John and Phebe's five surviving children made confirming sales of the property their parents had sold to Joseph Outen Bogart in 1800 when they had been minors.[8])

Phoebe, wife of John Tabele, died on 27 December 1809,[9] and John Tabele, late of the firm John and William Tabele, died on 16 April 1810.[9] Their graves are at St. Paul's Chapel Churchyard in lower Manhattan.[10][11]

Letters of administration on the estate of John Tabele, late merchant of New York, were granted to James Tabele, a brother, and Jonathan Smith, a creditor of the deceased, on 12 November 1813.[12]

Children of John and Phebe (Outen Bogart) Tabele:[4][8]

Phebe's uncle Abraham Outen Bogart died with no children, and by his will, proved on 6 August 1812, directed his executors to sell and dispose of all his real estate as soon as conveniently may be after his decease; and along with quite a quantity of other legacies he left "one equal ninth part [of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate both real and personal or the monies arising from the sale thereof] unto the children of Phoebe Tabele deceased (late the wife of John Tabele deceased and daughter of my said late brother Joseph deceased) and to their heirs in case of their decease, equally to be divided among them."[26]

On 16 March 1818, Phebe's sister (and sister-in-law) Martha (Outen Bogart) Tabele filed a suit of partition on property from their father's estate in New York City, naming John Tabele, Paul S. Brown and Elizabeth B. Brown, his wife, Phoebe A. Tabele, Martha W. Tabele, Mary H. Tabele, and James Tabele [presumably in his capacity as administrator of their parents' estate] among the defendants. Notice was given that Paul S. Brown and Elizabeth B. Brown, his wife, and Phoebe A. Tabele were residents of Philadelphia, and that John Tabele was resident of Havana, Cuba.[27] The court ordered a sale of the property, Nos. 4 and 6 Hague Street, and after due notice, two sales were made at auction.[28]

John Ashfield deceased, and whereas such proceedings were afterwards had at court of Chancery on 29 January 1819, a certain decretal order or decree was made whereby it was amongst other things ordered that lots with appurtenances be sold at public auction under superintendence of James Fairlie... and whereas John McKesson and William N. Dyckman Junior, Commissioners did on 29 March last sell at public auction for $12,150 to the sd. Commissioners having reported sd. sale together with another sale of the residue of sd. premises to the Court of Chancery a certain other decretal order was made in sd. suit on 15 June instant, whereby amongst other things it was ordered that sd. sales were approved, now therefore, sd. parties of the first part for $12,150 in hand paid, have granted, etc. the premises herein described.[29]

Tabele, and John Tabele to attend a hearing on their uncle Joseph Outen Bogart's accounts with their aunt Esther Outen Bogart, who had been declared a lunatic and made a ward of Joseph's, was printed.[31]
